Concentration Tests: Measuring the Duration of Sustained Attention

Concentration is a key element of sports performance. An athlete who loses focus during a match or competition risks making decisive mistakes.

📌 Why measure concentration?

đŸ”č An athlete must be able to maintain their attention on a specific task for the entire duration of the effort.

đŸ”č Poor concentration leads to technical errors, loss of clarity, and decreased performance.

đŸ”č Measuring concentration allows for tracking its evolution and adapting mental exercises accordingly.

📋 Test Objective : Evaluate the athlete's ability to maintain their attention on a specific task, under normal conditions or under pressure.

📌 Methods to Test Concentration

There are several types of tests to evaluate the capacity for attention and concentration.

1ïžâƒŁ Sustained Attention Duration Test

🎯 Objective: Measure how long an athlete can maintain stable attention on a repetitive task.

📌 Exercise:

  • The athlete must focus their attention on a specific target for a given time.

  • The target can be a physical object, a ball, a target to aim at, or a repetitive cognitive task.

  • The goal is to measure the duration before a distraction manifests (intrusive thoughts, decrease in intensity, loss of vigilance).

📊 Evaluation:

  • Score = Total duration of concentration without interruption.

  • Repeat several times and compare the results to see the evolutions.

🎯 Concrete Example: A basketball player must keep their gaze fixed on the basket for 3 minutes while performing dribbles in motion.

✅ Objective achieved if : They keep their gaze stable without being distracted by noises, the coach, or the environment.

❌ If attention wanes (gaze drifting, hesitations), the duration of attention is recorded and will serve as a basis for mental training.

2ïžâƒŁ Selective Attention Test (Filtering Distractions)

🎯 Objective: Measure the athlete's ability to concentrate on a task despite external distractions.

📌 Exercise:

  • A coach reads a list of words or numbers at regular intervals.

  • The athlete must identify only certain specific words and repeat them aloud.

  • During the exercise, background noises are introduced (music, discussions, whistles) to simulate a noisy environment.

📊 Evaluation:

  • Score based on the number of errors and reaction time.

  • The shorter the reaction time and the fewer the errors, the better the concentration.

🎯 Concrete Example: A football player performs a passing exercise with their teammate while listening to the coach's instructions. They must react only when the coach says a specific keyword.

✅ Objective achieved if : They react instantly without being disturbed by other sounds.

❌ If errors are made, this indicates a lack of concentration under pressure.

3ïžâƒŁ Visual and Cognitive Focus Test

🎯 Objective: Measure the ability to stay focused on a specific task while processing secondary information.

📌 Exercise:

  • The athlete must follow a moving object (e.g., thrown ball) while performing a simple mental calculation.

  • The goal is to maintain a precise execution of the movement while staying focused on the calculation.

📊 Evaluation:

  • Score based on the number of errors in the movement or calculation.

  • The fewer the errors, the better the multitasking concentration.

🎯 Concrete Example: A judoka must count down in intervals of 3 while executing a fluid technical sequence.

✅ Objective achieved if : They execute the technique correctly while staying focused on the counting.

❌ If the counting or technique deteriorates, this indicates difficulty managing multiple sources of attention.

📌 Tracking and Interpreting Results

📋 Tracking Method :

  • Test Frequency : Repeat the test every 2 to 4 weeks.

  • Compare the results to observe the progress or stagnation.

  • Adapt mental training based on the results (e.g., add refocusing exercises if scores are unstable).

📊 Expected Evolution:

  • Reduction of distraction time.

  • Improvement of concentration duration on repetitive tasks.

  • Better resistance to distractions under pressure.

🎯 Concrete Example: A tennis player who made 6 concentration errors per match at the beginning of their tracking sees this number drop to 2 errors after 2 months of mental training. This proves measurable improvement and motivates to continue the work.

Why tracking concentration is crucial?

✔ Concentration directly influences sports performance.

✔ A structured tracking allows identifying moments when the athlete mentally drops.

✔ By comparing results, it is possible to adjust mental preparation to maximize effectiveness.

"The key to success is concentration on a clear goal until it is achieved."
